The Fashion Specialty Studio, located at 63 Fifth Avenue and is equipped with 25+ machines for garment finishing and special materials construction. All machines are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.  For a full list of machines found in the studio, as well as materials and other crucial information needed to use each machine, see below.

Staff Technicians hold office hours during which they are available in the Specialty Room for questions and consultations. These are:

Mon/Tues 1:00-4:00pm; Wed 2:00-8:00p; Thurs/Fri/Sat 10am-1pm

Students are welcome to come by anytime during our open hours to swatch the available fabrices at the studio.

Once you have swatched your desired fabric(s), please submit a request to Please be aware that approvals for this process can take up to 4 business days. Your request should including the following:
  • Course Title
  • Instructor
  • Project
  • Yardage Required (Needed for each fabric being requested)
  • Image/snapshot of Fabric(s) (Needed for each fabric being requested)

Some of the machines in the Specialty Sewing Studio require orientations or appointments to use. Specifically for the buttonholing machine, you must make an appointment beforehand. For a list of all of the machines available at the sewing studio, see the “Related Equipment and Tools” section.
The following equipment can only be used after taking the appropriate orientation beforehand:

  • Picoetta Edge/Faggoting Machine
  • Picot Edge/Hem Stitch Machine
  • Edge Skiving Machine
  • Flatbed Coverstitch Machine (Not required but students are highly encouraged to sign up for overlock orientations.)

For those interested in using the Tajima Embroidery machine, it is now located at the Graphics Lab. The embroidery machine is a useful tool for making your own designs in Adobe Illustrator and converting them into stitch pattens and patches on a variety of materials. Please follow the policies and rules provided there to use the machine.
